FAQs

  • Which is the best time to visit Myanmar?

October to April is the best time of years to visit Myanmar because that is the period after the end of the monsoon.
  • Do I need to exchange currency upon arrival?

Yes, it’s more favourable for you to exchange your US Dollars into local currency (Kyatt – pronounced CHUT) and use in purchasing meals, drinks and for your discretionary spending. Please note that US Dollars and Euros are the only foreign currency that may be exchanged or used in Myanmar and should be clean, new notes, unfolded and not crinkled up.
  • Can I use credit cards in Myanmar?

In general, credit cards are not accepted in Myanmar although some major hotels will accept them in return for a hefty surcharge. This is also reason why MPH pay all your major travel costs before you arrive. However, don’t forget to bring further cash (USD$) to pay for your meals and drinks and in case of spending extra money.
  • Can I use ATMs in Myanmar ?

There are ATM machines available in the almost places where you will visit (Yangon, Bagan, Mandalay, Inle, etc.). For these ATMs you can withdraw with Myanmar Kyats only by Visas or MasterCard. Otherwise, you can use currency exchange service at the airport, your hotel or do a transaction at the banks. However, the US Dollar can use at the big shops but it is advisable to carry some Myanmar Kyat for small purchases. Credit cards not very widely accepted in most shops and restaurants.
  • How can I access the internet in Myanmar?

Thanks to the development of technology, the internet access in Myanmar is now much better than before. Free Wi-Fi is available in almost hotels but some of which still require a small fee. You had better ask the receptionist for this convenience in advance.
  • Can I use my mobile phone in Myanmar?

Your mobile phone will NOT work in Myanmar as Myanmar currently has no roaming agreement with any country. Some roaming services are becoming available, including Thailand (AIS), Singapore (M1) (SINGETEL) (STARHUB) and Vietnam (Viettel). Alternatively, a phone rental system is available from the Yangon International Airport. No more deposit payment and phone credit are an additional cost with cards available for 5000 - 10,000 Kyat (must be paid in cash). These top up cards are available for purchase throughout the country.
